Today Is Sun/Monday", 2005, video stills, duration:7.15 min"...Actually, for example, the invited artist Turkish artist Ferhat Özgür best pictures the essence of "video dia loghi". Özgür presents "Today Is Sun/Monday" (2005), a work centred on a particular market of Ankara. Initially called "Russian Market" because, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the refugees coming from the ex-communist countries went there to sell everything they had in their bags. For a certain time it was known as "Maltepe Market", after the name of the quarter, where goods were sold VAT-free and without any controy by the state. It changed again its name, today is called " Hawker's Market", but still continues to be a special place, here sellers retail fruit and vegetables from inside their trolleys, mobile stalls pulled in from the nearby parking area.
Özgür demonstrates the establishment phases of two different bazaars that are set every week and the struggle of the "pullers" with wheeled-portable stands, trolleys, the tragedy of them through semi-documentary, impressive narration. Özgür pictures, in a sort of documentary, the awakening of the street, the stalls that grows more and more in number until they fill the whole area, the silhouettes of the sellers. But the artist refuses the sterotypes of such a gender, paying attention in particular to the visual structure avoiding a too close interest in the images portrayed. Rather he tries to follow a structure that goes beyond a mere narration and moves forward by means of suggestions. The boundary between documentary and video art is not that marked and this very hybridisation of genders is the interesting point of this work and allows it to avoid an easy catologuing. "...Doğal olarak, örneğin Türkiye'den sergiye davetli olan Ferhat Özgür, "video dia loghi"nin özünü en iyi biçimde betimliyor. Özgür bu sergide Ankara'da Maltepe Pazarı'nı merkez alan çalışmasını sunuyor. "Bugün Günlerden Pazar/Tesi" (2005). Bu pazar, Sovyetler Birliği'nin çöküşünden sonra eski komünist bloktan gelen sığınmacıların Türkiye'ye göç ederken beraberinde getirdikleri çeşitli eşyaları satlamalarından dolayı ilk olarak "Rus Pazarı" diye biliniyor. Belli bir süre için malların KDV'siz ve devlet kontrolünden uzak olarak satıldığı bu pazar daha sonra semtin adıyla birlikte "Maltepe Pazarı" olarak anılmaya başlandı. Bu pazar ile aynı yerde haftada bir gün kurulan sebze ve meyve pazarının da olmasından dolayı "Maltepe Pazarı"ndaki tüm tezgahlar "tekerlekli ve taşınabilir"dükkanlardan oluşuyor. Özgür bu videoda, farklı yapıda iki pazarın kuruluş aşamalarını, "çekiciler"in tekerlekli tezgahlarla olan mücadelelerini, onların dramını yarı belgesel ve çok çarpıcı bir dille sunuyor. Özgür bir çeşit belgesel ile sokağın uyanışını, seyyar arabaların bütün alanı doldurana kadar giderek sayıca artmalarını, satıcıların siluetlerini betimliyor. Ama sanatçı bu cins stereotipleri reddedip, betimlediği görüntülere çok yakın bir ilgiden kaçınarak özellikle görsel yapıya dikkatini yönlendiriyor. Daha çok salt anlatının ötesine geçen ve öneriler aracılığıyla ileri doğru hareket eden bir yapıyı takip etmeye çalışıyor. Belgesel ile video art arasındaki sınır o kadar belirtilmiş değil ve bu cinslerin bolca melezlenmesi bu çalışmanın ilginç noktasını oluşturuyor ve kolayca kategorize edilebilmenin önüne geçilmesine fırsat tanıyor.
