CONDITIONED is a compilation of eight experimental film and video art from Turkey that explores the intellectual conditioning of children and teenagers through both the educational system and contemporary Turkish society at large. Through a variety of styles and approaches, each of these works elude to the conditioning of youth including references to the seemingly innocent daily repetition of the national anthem (The First Ones by Hatice Güleryüz), military methods (Origin by Erkan Özgen), and social injustice (Our village by Sener Özmen). From the privacy of home (A young girl is growing up by Ferhat Özgür) to public spaces (On the thin ice of Burçak Kaygun), several processes are at play, subtly or directly, through the women's prison featured in Koro by Güldem Durmaz or the school in Where Bluebirds fly by Berat Isik. Beyond that lies a reflection on the impact of the world and on the development of an individual such as with the video Delirium by Ethem Özgüven confronting the mechanisms of the consumer society and its psychological consequences.

VARIATIONS VII

Une performance multimédia événement. Première en France. "Variation VII" est la réinterprétation d'une œuvre majeure du compositeur américain John Cage, créée en 1966, utilisant le son créé par les outils de communication. Quatre artistes contemporains (Atau Tanaka, le duo :zoviet-france: et Matt Wand) transposent l'œuvre de nos jours, l'interpréte avec l'ensemble des médias contemporains analogiques et numériques existants (téléphone, télévision, ordinateurs, internet...), pour un résultat sonore étonnant.

The video Halleluja by Ferhat Özgür, presented at the 2010 Berlin Biennale, focuses on a woman from Anatolia, who sings the bitter and provocative version in playback of the original song 'Hallelujah' to Leonard Cohen. In the background you see the new buildings of concrete, metal and glass, that advance. Built on the grounds of "abusive" housing, the gececondu are demolishing and marginalizing the traditional minarets of mosques. The artist tells us about the loss of identity typical of illegal construction, through the use of music and images.

The city’s right is much more than individual freedom of accessibility to urban resources: it is the right to change ourselves, in order to change the city. David Harvey

Isola Art Center continues with its cultural events hosted by the residents of the neighborhood, enhancing Architettando..., curated by Valerio Del Baglivo, Aria Spinelli and Elvira Vannini, which will be held from November 27th to December 31st, 2010. The term is here understood in its linguistic duality. The Italian word "Architettando" means both the activity of construction - in its physical and unrealistic sense – but also alludes to planning a deception.

The political mechanisms that control urban development and its imbalances, reflect a neoliberal economy, and have resulted, for some years now, for the Isola Neighborhood, as in a continuous fatal process of gentrification, which responds to the needs of an increasingly capitalized elite. The planners, property developers and politicians are plotting. The space that was once public is now privatized. The last agricultural and industrial architecture of the past left are now erased. Architects are planning, the cranes are dominating the skyline and new urban developments are visibly growing. They are almost all offices, shops or luxury homes, designed to radically change the nature of the mixed working class neighborhood. Mostly consisting in unavoidable antagonisms and political interests, the city is no longer an expression of the needs and demands of society, or of the neighborhood’s community.

Lefebvre has already pointed out that the physical form of the city is a product of the accumulation of capital, but also that the legitimacy of the same socio-economic powers gives rise to a potential subversive: resistance to the use of urban spaces and aesthetic opposition to incessant construction. In its complexity, Architettando..., therefore wishes to reflect on art practitioners, architects and documentary filmmakers who have taken the urban and social transformation as the focus of their research. The exhibition will open on Saturday 27th with a video screening of works by Ferhat Özgür, Nebojsa Milikic, Fifth Park, which tell stories and recount events of other districts spatially distant from Milan, but very close to its conditions and forms of resistance. The documentary director Gianluca Brezza (La casa verde - una storia politica) depicts the story of a house and its inhabitants swallowed by the new skyscraper for the Lombardy Region offices, built on the park area of of Gioia. Finally, AUFO (Architectural and Urban Forum) Fabrizio Bellomo and Marco Vaglieri -out, reflect on the hoax of unfeasible construction plans and the administrative bureaucracy that congests the city.

For the event on Monday 29th Lorenzo Degli Esposti (AUFO), Marco Biraghi, Ernesto d'Alfonso and Nicolò Privileggio will discuss the significance of the group activities AUFO, starting from the project No-spot City.

A self-funding diner will follow, entitled How to Build a perfect dinner. Artists and curators from Isola will cook recipes of architects Gianni Pettena, Francesco Careri and Stealth.ultimited, requested for the occasion. Reservations are required. Please call 347 126 4847.

Finally, the special project No Formula One No Cry by Anri Sala will be presented, a project curated by Fani Zguro already exhibited in many cities worldwide, and that will be visible only by booking a trip in a cab.

The project will develop in a dense program during two days –November 27th and 29th- involving artists and curators in the implementation of various events with the aim of reflect on the concept of gentrification, a process still scarcely recognized in the Italian context, but that has already involved many urban areas of its territory. The show will instead extend for two months, until December 31.

Digitales Erbe: Ausstellung zur Videokunst in Deutschland von 1963 bis heute

"40jahrevideokunst.de“ ist ein von Wulf Herzogenrath angeregtes Initiativprojekt der Kulturstiftung des Bundes. Das Goethe-Institut hat die internationale Vermittlung der DVD - Studienedition im Rahmen dieser Kooperation übernommen.

Videogeschichte erforschen bedeutet heute vor allem zunächst einmal, das audiovisuelle Material der vergangenen Jahrzehnte wieder sichtbar zu machen. Vieles lagert vergessen in Museumsdepots und Künstlerateliers, ohne dass es angeschaut werden kann. Auf seltsamen quadratischen oder auch fünfeckigen Kassetten gespeicherte Inhalte sind verschwunden oder defekt. Die Bänder selber sind zudem kaum mehr lauffähig, da sie begonnen haben, sich allmählich aufzulösen und zu verkleben. Um diesen Verfall zu stoppen, wurde 2004 am Karlsruhe Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie das Labor für antiquierte Videosysteme eingerichtet. Inzwischen verfügt es über einen großen funktionierenden historischen Gerätepark gepaart mit moderner digitaler Technik, der es möglicht, über 50 obsolete Videoformate der 60er bis 80er Jahre wieder sichtbar zu machen, hochwertig zu digitalisieren und damit für die Nachwelt zu erhalten. Wesentliches Ziel ist die Rettung, Pflege und Vermittlung des kulturellen Erbes der Videokunst, deren Fortbestand und Bewahrung durch die begrenzte Haltbarkeit ihrer Speichermedien akut gefährdet ist.

Diese Studienedition bietet einen historischen Überblick über 40 Jahre Videokunst in Deutschland sowie einen Vergleich mit der internationalen Medienkunstszene. Darunter sind u. a. der berühmte Boxkampf, den Joseph Beuys 1972 auf der documenta 5 veranstaltete, die Rekonstruktion der auf sechs Monitoren gezeigten Arbeit "Schafe" von Wolf Kahlen, Marcel Odenbach, Peter Weibel, Ursula Wevers.

Yapi Kredi Cultural Center in Istanbul will host the exhibition titled "PastPresentFuture." The UniCredit Art Collection, one of Europe's largest corporate collections, is the source of this travelling exhibition which opens in Istanbul, European Capital of Culture for 2010, after the debut in Vienna in October 2009 and the stop in Verona last spring. The exhibition will be open between November 6th 2010 and January 7th 2011. On display there will be works from the collections of the various banks of the Group. There will also be seven works from the Yapı Kredi Art Collection, including Osman Hamdi Bey's Feraceli Kadınlar (Women Wearing Fullcoats, 1887) a masterpiece from the turn of the century in Istanbul.

Curated by UniCredit Art & Scientific Commission Chairman Walter Guadagnini, the exhibition spans four centuries European art history and creates a dialogue between eras and languages. With this exhibition, including 90 works, UniCredit's significant art collection meets with Turkish art lovers for the first time.

The company's artistic and cultural heritage is mainly derived from the collections of UniCredit in Italy, HypoVereinsbank in Germany and Bank Austria. It comprises 60,000 works that together capture the history of art from ancient Greece and classical Rome to the present day. The collection, which is currently being studied and re-catalogued, is a trans-European museum that can be experienced in the Group's main offices and at the sites of its institutional partners in culture.

The show's concept is based on a variety of languages and allows visitors to see the past through contemporary eyes and to look from the present towards the future. From ancient works by significant painters including Giovanni Girolamo Savoldo and Dosso Dossi, the exhibition moves to collages by Kurt Schwitters and canvases by Giorgio de Chirico, to installations by such artists as Tony Cragg, Stephen Balkenhol and Giulio Paolini, and to photographs by Andreas Gursky and Thomas Struth.
