SOCIAL SOUND / ART ABOUT MUSIC AND WHAT LIFE SOUNDS De Blokhuispoort Blokhuisplein 40: 5 January-16 February 2013, The Netherlands

SOCIAL SOUND / ART ABOUT MUSIC AND WHAT LIFE SOUNDS LIKE

The art initiative VHDG proudly presents Social Sound, a multidisciplinary exhibition program about the social function of music. Social Sound takes place from the 5th of January until the 16th of February 2013 and shows how artists investigate the social role of music, in a program that includes an exhibition, workshops, lectures, concerts and several manifestations in the public space. The main location is former prison De Blokhuispoort in Leeuwarden. Additional projects will be launched in the city center of Leeuwarden.

Social Sound presents existing and new work of Dutch and international artists, like Turner Prize winner Jeremy Deller (GB), Matt Stokes (GB), David First (USA), Merlijn Twaalfhoven (NL), Ferhat Özgür (TR), Steven Jouwersma (NL), !Mediengruppe Bitnik (CH), Marijn van Kreij (NL), Katarina Zdjelar (SRB), Bouke Groen (NL), Tellervo Kalleinen & Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen (FI), Elke Uitentuis & Nienke Jansen (NL), Toon Fibbe (NL), The Little Sisters of Gay Mutton (NL) and Elena Bajo (ES). The exhibited works discuss issues that are now present in society, show how people interact and investigate what role music plays in these matters.

During the exhibition visitors can also visit the Sonic Restaurant of David First in the city center of Leeuwarden. Here they serve sound instead of food. The unconventional concert adventure ‘The Air We Breathe’ of Merlijn Twaalfhoven will come to the cellblock of the monumental prison. Also there is a newly established Complaints Choir in Leeuwarden, which is an art project of Tellervo Kalleinen and Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen, who give complaining Leeuwardeners a voice in a choir. These projects are complemented by a program of lectures, workshops, concerts and other activities.
