WERKLEITZ FESTIVAL 2014

WERKLEITZ FESTIVAL 2014

Contemporary art was born in the last 20 years. The new art emerging through changes in institutional structures as well as in structural features was bearing various different characteristics. The exhibition curated by Hasan Bülent Kahraman envelops these differences with two fundamental concepts: autonomy and beauty.

Autonomy is one of the most striking qualities of new art. This was achieved through a comprehensive and compelling relationship that it established with the political and the social. Notions such as memory, identity, belonging, space and body altogether formed the backbone of the works of this period, but at the same time, these were creating the plane of intersection of the social and the political.

At the same time, the exhibition establishes the beautiful as another structural feature of the new art. Perhaps the most overlooked characteristic of new art in Turkey is highlighted through the works in this exhibition. The exhibition advocates that the aesthetic beauty becomes a specific “tool” for the constitution of the aesthetics of the surface, the volume, the space and of the body. Equally, it argues that the beautiful is adopted by artists as a founding principle and emphasises that the new art in Turkey is turned into a distinctive but at the same time a political resistance context.

Once I used to watch the movies of Ingmar Bergman, now I paste notes taken from E-flux and Art-agenda. "All About These ... Ladies and Gentlemen" is nothing but an illustration of the images that set these notes in motion (Fani Zguro).

Viafarini presents “About All These… Ladies and Gentlemen”, a video screening curated by Fani Zguro  in collaboration with Gallery On The Move, from December 10 until December 14, 2013.

Metamorphosis Chat is the title of Ferhat Özgür’s video shown as part of the exhibition. As its name implies, this is about an artistic chat. Throughout the week Turkish visual artist Ferhat Özgür and French choreographer Alain Buffard will take time to meet and bring together their approach to ideas and practices.  The audience will be invited to share this artistic encounter: from a selection of videos by Ferhat Özgür, the two artists will hold an open dialogue on their respective fields.

as part of the ‘quinzaine des tiers mondes et de la solidarité internationale’ (fortnight dedicated to third-world countries and international solidarity), in association with cimade ngo

Quartiers libres night (title of the performance by Nadia Beugré, literally ‘free time’) invites us to explore, exchange and discover these parallel stories that take the form of an exhibition, a performance and discussions:

Opening of the exhibition Histoires parallèles, pays mêlés, featuring artists from outside Europe working on issues of territories, power, representations and genres.

Quartiers libres, solo work by Nadia Beugré in which the Ivorian dancer/choreographer frees herself from Western choreographies to address issues of violence against women in Africa.Discussions and meeting with local key players and witnesses regularly faced with migration, territorial and power issues, in association with and hosted by the ‘Maison des Tiers Monde et de la Solidarité Internationale Montpellier’ and Cimade NGO.

]domaines[ alain buffard
histoires parallèles, pays mêlés
november 18 and 21

Alain Buffard, who studied dance with Alwin Nikolais, met with US choreographers Yvonne Rainer and Anna Halprin, who would have a great influence on his career. Performer for Daniel Larrieu or Régine Chopinot among others, he created Good Boy in 1998, a solo work as uncompromising and straightforward as a manifesto. While ever changing, Buffard’s work has always been dealing with recurring issues. Following a period of questioning art, body and genre, the choreographer started to focus on the suggestion that dance is mainly about the body – as a political challenge – which cannot be ignored: his pieces are regularly shown during Montpellier Danse Festival and throughout the year: Baron Samedi, Tout va bien, Good boy.

Histoires parallèles : pays mêlés (parallel stories – blended countries) was created in the Spring 2013 in Nimes around the ethnography gallery of the Natural History Museum. This ]domaines[ in the CCN will provide for the re-invention of this event in a location not dedicated to visual arts. It reflects the variety of Alain Buffard’s practices, with no concern for hierarchy, and above all the need to shift presentation frameworks and assumed categories that go with them.

Histoires parallèles : pays mêlés illustrates a journey towards or from the other. Fragments of stories, networks of images and accounts combining special chronicles, uncommon paths, specific knowledge; a journey across different practices as the basis of our memories of the future.

Guest artists are willing to display these comings and goings from one culture to another, which do not however lead to a cultural blending.  They work on the plasticity of the world by refusing to set boundaries, forms and genres. They share the will to account for the nobleness and deep humanity of the people and subjects with whom they interact through works that illustrate contemporary practices within various converging areas.

From the other who fashions our own singularity we know that our future memory is already out there, elsewhere.

November-December 2013, Kuad Gallery will present an exhibition focusing on line. The realization of this exhibition was based on crucial reasons. We are witnessing the artist’s continuous commitment to the techniques of line. Furthermore the fact that line is the most fast and simple expression of idea and imagination and that there are many possibilities of drawing a line with computer techniques and that there is the moving line in video techniques has guided us to deal with the related works of art. However, we refrain to name this technique as “drawing” which is the traditional-classical and Modernist-poetic term. The political, social and cultural concepts and contents and the relational aesthetic in the images produced with various techniques of line invoke an updated gaze and perception of the viewer. Drawings and videos produced with lines propose decipherable and intelligible images and henceforth liberated forms of seeing which is an alternative to the hegemony of forms of seeing strictly programmed by digital images which are in turn are programmed by the consumption and media oriented visual culture.

FERHAT ÖZGÜR
«women in love», 2013
DVD, 13’20’’, loop

Opening @ Progr.ch: Thurs., October 17, 2013, 6-8 p.m.

Ferhat Özgür is a poetic chronicler of his surroundings and one of the most fascinating contemporary Turkish artists. Most of his incredible works emerge from the historically important melting pot of his home country, where different cultures and religions converge. He is a master of subtle nuances and of complex searches for clues. Furthermore, he is skilled at humorously and profoundly positioning his works in between the tensions of tradition and modern times: some are spontaneous observations, some cinematically composed pieces.

His work «women in love», belongs to the first category. Three grown and experienced Turkish women talk about their deceased husbands in front of the camera. They also recount intimate details of their sexuality, talk about alcohol abuse or domestic violence. Even though the women don’t seem to remember any happy moments, the «main character» is – despite all the sufferings - still madly in love with her husband. She is collecting keepsakes and memorabilia of him – and even dedicates a little dance performance to her late husband. The well-positioned steps orchestrate the conversation and enable a direct, almost voyeuristic but still tender access to a Turkish living room. Once again, Ferhat Özgür manages to register the big topic of death and love in a video essay. With «women in love» he creates an ambivalent metaphor of reality and idealization.
