Millions of people travel in far regions. But, they don't find the unknown. Cities resemble one another; local customs have become world trends. All the places we long for are reachable in every moment; tourism has destroyed old utopias… Mobility among the cities, in all kinds of tourism and migration, has changed in its basis our relation towards the city and our cities… For tourists and migrants, the land on which the city is lying, has become again the main subject.

(Boris Groys: World On Travel, in: Making Things Visible. Strategy of Contemporary Art, Refleksije book collection, MSU, Zagreb, 2006, page 66-67)

In accordance with this year’s topic, the Tourist City is settled as a platform for discussion and interdisciplinary reflection on the culture of travelling and its social, cultural, economic and urban consequences. The homonymous exhibition tries to explore in a larger contest the phenomenon of contemporary tourism, the aesthetic and iconography of travelling, as well as the possibilities of its implementation in the society and environment.

The development of tourism in the last decade, although relatively short, but almost quick as lightning, has proved its wide-ranging spectra of effects. Whereas, contemporary life diminished the polarity between “work” and “free time”, the concept of free time has undergone through a numerous transformations in the last decades. In 1957, Roland Barthes has written on a few occasions and in a few chapters of the Mythologies, about tourism as one of the myths of the contemporary society. The interest of the tourist is based on the investigation to participate in new and noteworthy cultural experiences, whether they are aesthetical, intellectual, emotional or psychological. Tourism is a delightful and educative experience, which combines art with natural and social cultural heritage and history. Today, contemporary art is recognized as an important and unavoidable factor of tourist offer. Tourist's experience amply represents an aesthetical experience (together with the hedonistic and educative), whereas tourism is conceived as a complex assemblage of relations and generative factors of future culture, while economy, tourism and culture are closely connected parts forming the definition of national identity. Since contemporary art implies criticism of contemporary society, tourism becomes the subject of interest for artists, who while using the language of tourist materials, behave as tourists or become tourists in search of new experiences. In distinction from the tourists, they take a critical position and reshape and comment the reality. Artists map certain spots of cultural, historical, artistic or natural heritage.

Journeys are midwives of thoughts, wrote Alain de Botton in his Art of Travel. The phenomenon of travelling and relating strategies are explored from different perspectives. Travelling is a multilayer process, a state in between. It represents a symbolic and private experience, at the same time something banal, as are spending and massive entertainment, while art works explore the same subject from different angles. Artists with their installations shape different spaces with which they are going to suggest the processes of tourism, as well as the critical relations towards a kind of symbolic, economic and social exchange or stimulate experiences and expose them to humour and irony. The numerous works mostly deal with the “consumer’s” aspect of tourism submissive to criticism, which represents the prevailing field of interest comprising the social context, people, experiences, contents, experience of being a tourist, travelling, locations, souvenirs, memories… The photos of Paula Muhr and Jelena Kovačević Jureša represent a kind of typical tourist snapshots, capturing the tourists while posing. On the other hand Gani Llalloshi and Paula Muhr deal with a subversion of the self-portrait genre. While Paula poses in front of the important sights of Italian architectural heritage, Gani Lalloshi catches hold of the composition and takes the pose from Manet’s Breakfast on Grass, but the scene is situated on a sandy beach in present time. The video works of Tanja Dabo and Goran Škofić are autobiographical recordings representing the “oppression of tourism”. Goran Škofić manifests his ecological responsibility with the repetitions of the action of taking out objects from the sea, whereas Tanja Dabo repeats the word welcome till she gets out of breath. The installation of Nika Radić reconstructs the experience of summer vacation on the isle of Zlarin, where courtyards are filled with summer gadgets and projections simulate houses with shutters wide open. The Souvenirs collected by Marko Tadić, on which he makes interventions, are old-fashioned memorabilia shaped as decorative wooden boards representing different tourist views. According to Ana Dević, these objects evoke nostalgic elegancy of the passed times, the pathos of kitsch, the uneasiness of cheep pleasures, the naïve bad taste, the rustic idyll of the vanished times and journeys. The works of Ferhat Özgür, Renata Poljak and Slaven Tolj deal with social, architectonic and urban phenomenon, the documentary film We are not selling Hollywood by Dejan Karaklajić and Jovan Aćin with subversive nostalgia gets us back in 1972 to the Penthouse episode of the tourist complex Haludovo on the isle of Krk. Whereas, the photos of SofijaSilvia represent scenes from the Brijuni isles as idyllic landscapes of romantic spirit, their absence being almost fixed in time, and transform this romantic tourism into, according to Boris Groys, a machine which transforms the temporary into permanent.

P.S. I am thanking Marko Lulić for his artistic production and strategy of appropriation, due to which I got acquainted with the film We are not selling Hollywood.

In Search of Lost Reality: NevGeneration

Gallery Nev: 25th Year Anniversary Exhibition.
in search of lost reality: nevgeneration
15.05.2009 - 15.08.2009

Opening its very first exhibition in May 1984, Galeri Nev is celebrating its twenty fifth anniversary this May. Having dedicated its past anniversaries to comprehensive exhibitions of the history of the gallery itself and of the three generations it represents, this time Nev choses to leave the past behind and look to the future.

The twenty fifth anniversary exhibition to be opened at Galeri Nev on the evening of May 15, consists mainly of the works by young artists born in the beginning of the 1980’s, marking the inception of the gallery. Nev Gereration thus sets out to discover a new generation that will be articulated to the previous ones. Works gathered under the caption of “In Search of Lost Reality” also raise many questions as to the art of the present day and point out to art's pursuit of reality at a time when reality has been lost.

NevGeneration includes the following artists: Barış Sarıbaş, Birtan Oran, Burcu Perçin, Ercan Akın, Ferhat Özgür, Hayal İncedoğan, Karolin Fişekçi, Lale Delibaş, Mehmet Ali Uysal, Murat Akagündüz, Mustafa Duymaz, Mustafa Karasu, Osman Kerkütlü, Şebnem Dönmez, Semra Karahan and Volkan Diyaroğlu.

galeri nev 25. yıl
kayıp gerçekliğin izinde: nevnesil
15 Mayıs 2009 Cuma - 15 Ağustos 2009 Cumartesi

İlk sergisini 1984 yılı Mayıs ayında açan Galeri Nev, 2009 Mayıs’ında yirmi beşinci yılını kutluyor. Geçtiğimiz yıldönümlerinde galerinin ve temsil ettiği üç kuşağın tarihine ilişkin kapsamlı sergiler düzenleyen Nev, bu kez geçmişe değil geleceğe bakmayı seçiyor.

15 Mayıs akşamı Ankara Galeri Nev'de açılacak olan yirmi beşinci yıl sergisi, çoğunluğu galerinin kurulduğu 1980'li yılların başında doğan genç sanatçıların eserlerinden oluşuyor. NevNesil böylece yeni bir kuşağın keşfine çıkıyor. “Kayıp Gerçekliğin İzinde” başlığının altında toplanan eserler aynı zamanda günümüz sanatına dair pek çok soru uyandırıyor. Gerçekliğin kaybedildiği bir zamanda sanatın gerçeklik arayışına işaret ediyor.

NevNesil’de, Barış Sarıbaş, Birtan Oran, Burcu Perçin, Ercan Akın, Ferhat Özgür, Hayal İncedoğan, Karolin Fişekçi, Lale Delibaş, Mehmet Ali Uysal, Murat Akagündüz, Mustafa Duymaz, Mustafa Karasu, Osman Kerkütlü, Şebnem Dönmez, Semra Karahan ve Volkan Diyaroğlu yer alıyor.

Solo show: 'City Log / Şehir Defteri'/ Yapı Kredi Kazım Taşkent Sanat Galerisi İstanbul

O, artık, modern bir İslam kadını
Annem onay veriyorsa sorun yoktur

Ülke içinde bile İstanbul’a gelinmeden olunmuyor...

The transformation of the socio-political system over the last twenty years, the neoliberalization of a broad spectrum of political, social and economic areas, and the impact of this and the consequences for society are omnipresent and yet hidden. Increasing poverty as a result of increasing wealth, the withdrawal of solidarity within society, the precarization of living conditions, the impoverishment of the middle classes and dramatic dangers to the livelihood of socially disadvantaged population groups, and the extreme divergence of income opportunities are peddled by government parties and their economic experts as essential measures to implement national austerity concepts to clean up the state budget and as a necessary instrument to increase economic growth. Decreed by neoliberalism, the tasks and benefits of the social welfare state are gradually eliminated. The redistribution of capital – benefiting corporations and shareholders – and the associated new establishment of social inequalities mark everyday life structures. The inflation of the concept of the social has resulted from a constructed necessity of neoliberal action and from constructed fantasies of economic salvation, thus successfully accelerating the dismantling of the welfare state.

The consequences are that the population is depoliticized, abandons solidarity, becomes powerless and impoverished at the symbolic level and the real level, and loses all perspectives at the level of imagination. The dismantling of the welfare state is the declared goal and determines a daily life of social inequality. Tax reductions for corporations, lay offs in favor of share gains, and low wages for more and more working hours produce conditions of inequality and poverty. The state and the middle class become poorer and power relations are shifted in the direction of capital oligarchy. The dismantling of the welfare state is an objective of right-wing conservative classes, who have succeeded in establishing their political and anti-social program as the mainstream through marketing strategies and media support. Eliminating jobs increases equity capital and wages are cut; realities are created, in which salaries are paid that is not enough to live on and have to be supplemented by the state. At the same time, state benefits primarily support the neoliberal business strategies of corporations and not the workers.

What effect do these changes have within social systems? The most precarious, of course, are the weakest, young people, migrants, single mothers, pensioners and the unemployed, because they either have to pay more or they are affected by reduced benefits. There is an increasing spread of a lack of prospects, a feeling of being overwhelmed, poverty and discrimination, leading to a call for a more equitable social distribution. No one is talking about shorter working hours as a proposal for stimulating redistribution structures, although this would be a crucial factor in combating mass unemployment. In response to a lack of social policy and as an alternative to the capitalist market there are counter-models emerging, such as basic income or self-organized cooperatives or parallel markets restructuring distribution systems.

Consequences of these developments are to be made visible and analyzed in this exhibition within socio-political and private systems. The exhibition will address consequences of neoliberal reality such as inherited poverty, lack of education and the lack of prospects among young people, and the emergence of parallel markets and raise the question of models of sociality or a society of solidarity and what social policy should look like. One model would be that of basic income, which like parallel markets represents a reaction to the failure of mainstream policies and implies a different distribution system, as well as self-organized cooperatives, which are developing self-determined communal forms of living and working and practicing new distribution mechanisms. Or could a shortening of working hours with full wage compensation not end mass unemployment and effect a more equitable distribution of work in terms of shorter full-time work?

Alternative systems of redistribution such as parallel markets, basic income or self-organized cooperatives are to be explored, and the question of sociality to be further examined. How important are concepts such as solidarity, the commons and social action today in the context of society?

Soft Manipulation

SOFT MANIPULATION
WHO IS AFRAID OF THE NEW NOW?

The exhibition starts from a cultural condition which many people across the globe are currently living through. It is a situation in which fear is being triggered, confinement taken as a given, surveillance considered as normal and conscious disinformation omnipresent, the whole under the cover of guaranteeing security, freedom of consumption and public policy transparency. More than anything, soft manipulation is the method of the day.

This condition is a symptom of the globalised world, where the flow of information, of capital and even people has become faster than ever, at least for those who have control and the necessary means. Those who are interested and involved in this social game, be it supranational formations, nation-states, big corporations or small companies, are creating rules of commitment where barriers, obstacles and signs of warning are used to monitor and create fear among their subjects. The driving forces of this order are produced and spread out rhizomatically from many sources, covering up to the remotest corner of the world.

This phenomenon is not recent, it has a long history and has been growing slowly and steadily. Our story starts with revealing the legacy of “cold war” tactics in manipulation. More recently, it has been implemented with the help of advanced techniques of surveillance, data gathering, biometric techniques of identification, “confinement without walls” and above all the manipulative potential of the mass media.

The invited artists all share an inquisitive stance towards the social realities produced by these means of soft manipulation. With works that cover all available media of contemporary art today, they provide us with possible ways of confronting this condition, whilst at the same time exposing, even challenging them: doubt is introduced into the system, fear is fended off with cunning play, manipulation is confronted with even more manipulation, and with artistic freedom.

The exhibition catalogue is due to come out in the course of February 2009.

Exhibition “TRUTHS and MIRAGES” – Video Art from Turkey

Exhibition “TRUTHS and MIRAGES” – Video Art from Turkey

7 November – 23 November

Opening – 19

.00hr, 6 Shipka Street (2nd floor) – Sofia

Thanks to the collaborative work of Mrs. Gonul Nuhoglu on the Turkish part and Dimitar Grozdanov, the Bulgarian audience will see 19 authors who work in the field of video art and unconventional forms in Turkey. The exhibition will open on the second floor of the gallery on Shipka Street 6 and will definitely cause interest and analysis on the part of the general public.

Contemporary Turkish art experienced a stormy development, a part of the authors, trained and exhibiting in Europe and America turn to national problems in order to showcase the commonly human. Actually it can be said that Turkish contemporary art, especially video art in Turkey is social with a stress on the universal values of the concept.

This demonstration of creative thought of video artists is the first of its kind in Bulgaria. No, not that there haven’t been video festivals, but this time we meet a very strange occurrence, whose energies come from within but mostly from cosmopolitan problems. This is not chance because a part of the authors live outside of Turkey and those who are from Istanbul for example are actually inhabitants of a unique and supranational mega polis. It can be said that this is video art of the dialogue of the inner dialogue which comes through regardless of whether the videos tend to be more documentaries or artistic. Here we must mention that in Turkey itself apart from the Istanbul biennial and a few museums of contemporary art more and more private galleries and centers are gaining recognition whose interest is solely focused on current artistic thought adding to that the interest of collectors towards video art we can confirm that the artists of Turkish dissent live in an environment which favorably stimulates their creativity- there exists competition and provocation, but also in space where the ideas will be popularized. Another peculiarity of this exhibition is the professionalism and the quality of these films- from their shooting to their montage and the addition of sound. This conclusion can serve as a challenge for Bulgarian video artists.

The exhibition “Truths and mirages” gives us the opportunity through a form of expression to create the truth of ourselves and to freshen our mirages of the world.

The Other Shore_Turkey_Huarte-Centre

Why is it that something that seems so close, like the dream of getting away at a long weekend, seems so strange? Istanbul, further than its stones and the weight of its history, of the complexity of its yearning for modernization and the increase of an Islam which is never univocal, possesses a living culture that is contemporary, plural and pronounced social character.

The Huarte Centre, through "While all this is happening", which will be held from the 11 to 16 of November, proposes to establish a complex dialogue through art and creativity. The most innovating photography, video, performance, music, cinema, literature and design will give life to the first great Conference of Contemporary Turkish Culture.

A process that can open a new perspective for the public and artists in Istanbul and Navarra, which, as Beral Madra, organizer of the Conference, declares, "they can understand the others' aspirations and ways of creating art, find similarities and differences". Meet, share, create and feel, from one shore to the other.

all about him, public billboards

“ALL ABOUT HIM” CAMPAIGN

A-A-H ! Campaign
( ALL ABOUT HIM Project )
Project of : Goethe-Institut Bulgarien & “ 39 grama” Newspaper
Project initiated and curated by: Ventsislav Zankov

The ‘All about Him’ Project aims to reflect through artistic means and in the public domain possible interpretations of men’s status nascendi in the first decade of the 21st c.

50 artists from 12 countries got involved in the project in 2008 through employing the widely used vehicles of communication, propaganda and advertising (print and electronic media). Their visual proposals and concepts for interpreting the ‘men’ phenomenon of today were presented censorship-free in an open-air exhibition at one of the most thriving public spaces in Sofia’s downtown area: the city garden right across from the ‘Ivan Vazov’ National Theatre. The selected visual proposals and concepts were posted on-line on the project website, featuring comments section for viewers and online voting which resulted in ‘The Pedestrian Award’ Winner Stefan Bohnenberger for his work ‘Holly Imagination’.

14 of the works presented at the exhibition which have passed the project’s Final Selection will replace the usual commercial billboards in Sofia’s downtown area on September 22nd to present non-commercial artistic visions for men’s presence and absence, for alternatives to understanding the men of today. The challenging goal of this project is to present and explore the controversies in our understanding about men’s roles today, in the beginning of the 21 c., by employing the same vehicles of propaganda and advertising which have invented for mass consumption the cliches and stereotypes of ‘being male’, of men representations and particularly those linked to prosperity in the first place. This project opens an opportunity for claiming self-reflection with a focus on the intimate and the personal in an environment of cliches and commercial ‘messages’, and thus questioning the authenticity of the convenient commercial image in the process. It is an effort that strives to discard commercial images and to lend ambivalence and (unpardonable for this environment) open-ended-ness in the search for men today. This project braves to challenge the deeply commercial, aggressive and ‘barring the right to appeal’ advertising business - and in particular the outdoor commercials at the hottest spots in the metropolis - with visual interpretations and personal experiences linked to facing the mirror and coming to terms with what men are today.

"Turkish Realities:Positions in Comtemporary Photography from Turkey"

Turkish Realities
In cooperation with the Frankfurter Bookfair 2008, Turkey, the Guest of Honour and the Culture Board, Frankfurt am Main, the Fotografie Forum
Frankfurt presents “Turkish Realities”, premiering a cross-section of contemporary Turkish photography and video. The artist’s main inspiration
today tends to come from the bipolar opposites in Turkish society, which are mirrored in the situation of Istanbul itself. This unique metropolis
has embodied antagonistic tendencies for hundreds of years: Asia and Europe, tradition and modernism, Islam and Christianity. It is shaped by a
constant state of everyday confrontation between ever-changing elements. Between these two antipodes there are varied positions, which make up
the Turkish realities.

ARTISTS: MURAT GERMEN, MERIH AKOGUL, SINASI GÜNES, NIL YALTER, ZEKI FAIK IZER, FERHAT ÖZGÜR, HÜSEYIN KARAKAYA, ILKER MAGA, ÖZLEM SULAK, YILDIZ MORAN, PINAR YOLACAN, AKSEL ZEYDAN GÖZ, AHMET POLAT, KORHAN KARAOYSAL UND BURCAK KAYGUN.

The accompanying publication „Turkish Realities. Positions in Contemporary Photography and Video from Turkey“ Kehrer Verlag, Heidelberg, will
be available for purchase at the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt. Duration: September 13th to October 26th, 2008
.
This exhibition is a production of the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt, curated by P. Celina Lunsford and Necmi Sönmez.
We wish to thank Turkey, the Guest of Honour Frankfurter Bookfair 2008, the Culture Board Frankfurt am Main
and the Hessen Ministry of Science and Art for their support.
