Statements on photos…”jump” series

“Jump” is a sign of facing up to history, cities and their veins, magnificience of impeccable historical buildings, their oppresive powers and their hidden meanings. These buildings…Why they look so dominant over me? Am I a victim who was dog-tired under them or shall I be a new Don Quichotte by my jumps to touch their peaks? Or should the act of “jump” be accepted admiration of reaching the splendidness of Otoman emperorship? City and history…They again fall upon me!... All I am to do is to accept to be a city-victim. Here, you see, how I am incapable of reaching out them! Anyhow, one can say that it was so exciting event. At least there is always someone who wants to cope with the buildings. Here, my mind and soul with no purpose, making irony of the spectator with a shocking vision, show again this eternal unresolution. I invite you to great contemplation where art stirs stroms on funny (dark humour), simple and almost ordinary subjects.
CAN WE CREATE OUR MOST POWERFUL WORKS BY OUR OWN FAILURE?

Ferhat Ozgur is one of the artists who are living in Ankara Ferhat Ozgur is one the few artists who write on contemporary art practices and theroretical problems while doing his contemporary arts works. He is trying to operate “Mixed Techniques Chats”, a platform of contemporary art debates, in Ankara where he lives. On his strong intellectual based works he is processing humanity spirit from politics to ethic, from art to social, from philosophy to psychology and religion to modern individual and his impossible situation. On his video “Purification” (Catharsis”, Ferhat Özgür presents heart breaking and irritating crying of 4 different women who are trying to purify their own souls from dangerous passions in 4 different monitors, with his various shoots that he took in a religious fastidiousness and discrecy. All these women that had believe the purification and convincing power of the water are competing with each other for removing their eye drops that are filled with blame, from their bodies. The artist reads the “Embrace” himself: this staging which begins before Iraque war and also has references to after war aims and consciously has a poetic quality. It is realized in a building under construction. There is a clear relationship between the figures that hug each other ond the anatomy of the place that surround them. It is as if they all murmur the same thing: We hug each other in a building under construction because “the peace” is stil under construction.”
(by Sener Ozmen,”Mama, Li Turchi” from the exhibiton catalogue titled “I am Too Sorry To Kill You”, Art-İst Publications, İstanbul, 2003)

“…When we consider that Ferhat Ozgur is not only an artist who creates his works with different techniques using video, photographp, installation and painting but also is also a curator, writer, translator and professor, this shows that his character cannot be construed according to certain categories. It is not difficult to reckon that these different identities, the positions these identities demand, collide with one another and give rise to concentration, which even he himself cannot inhabit. One can also say that this concentration is his driving force and that this force drives him to produce more and behave under different identities. (By Nemci Sonmez, “Meltem of İstanbul, from the exhibition catalogue text, Project 4L Elgiz Contemporary Museum Publishing, İstanbul, 2007)

"Today Is Sun/Monday" video, duration: 7:10 min.

Today Is Sun/Monday", 2005, video stills, duration:7.15 min

"...Actually, for example, the invited artist Turkish artist Ferhat Özgür best pictures the essence of "video dia loghi". Özgür presents "Today Is Sun/Monday" (2005), a work centred on a particular market of Ankara. Initially called "Russian Market" because, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the refugees coming from the ex-communist countries went there to sell everything they had in their bags. For a certain time it was known as "Maltepe Market", after the name of the quarter, where goods were sold VAT-free and without any controy by the state. It changed again its name, today is called " Hawker's Market", but still continues to be a special place, here sellers retail fruit and vegetables from inside their trolleys, mobile stalls pulled in from the nearby parking area.

Özgür demonstrates the establishment phases of two different bazaars that are set every week and the struggle of the "pullers" with wheeled-portable stands, trolleys, the tragedy of them through semi-documentary, impressive narration. Özgür pictures, in a sort of documentary, the awakening of the street, the stalls that grows more and more in number until they fill the whole area, the silhouettes of the sellers. But the artist refuses the sterotypes of such a gender, paying attention in particular to the visual structure avoiding a too close interest in the images portrayed. Rather he tries to follow a structure that goes beyond a mere narration and moves forward by means of suggestions. The boundary between documentary and video art is not that marked and this very hybridisation of genders is the interesting point of this work and allows it to avoid an easy catologuing. (By Lorena Tadorni "Video Dia Loghi", exhibition statement-text, published in Rh+Art Magazine, February, 2007, issue 37)

"We Speak Through The Sound of Junks", 2006, video stills, 7:25”

The video demonstrates several workers who are dealing with junks-scraps in a small workshop named “Sahinler Metal” in Ankara. A container in this video avarages 60 kg large block from each material a day. The blocks later on are transported to the main factory in İstanbul from Ankara in order to be used in recycling. The video is accompanied by a special noise effects provided by the noise-sound available there by manupulation. The workers Recep, Turan and Duran have been working for ten years in this small workshop and speaking through the sound of junks. What was astonishing was that the worker were as if they were struggling with the junks as some protagonists like Cezar, Warhol did. In this sense, it did not seemed strange to perceive the enviroment and the workers like an artist’s studio.

“Monsieur! This is Ankara Castle”, 2006, video, 15:20”

In Ankara Castle the children who were guiding the tourists were giving information about the castle with an incomprehensible English in exchange of 1 New Turkish Lira. I also wanted to get information from them and gave each of the 1 New Turkish Lira, to get it started. In fact they were not quite aware of what they were talking about. This was not any of significance, since all of them were reciting from a text that they had memorized. A retired teacher of history came and explained “original version”, as she was rather personal commentary.

The work was exhibited in Project 4L Istanbul Contemporary Art Museum in 2002, curated by Vasıf Kortun. The name of the show which derived from the rebellious attitude of 1968 student generation was "Under The Beach: Pavement".
